SDF expects mass evacuations from last ISIS holdout

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) prepared Monday (February 25th) for another round of evacuations from the last shard of territory held by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in Syria, AFP reported.

The SDF have slowed down their offensive as they seek to evacuate civilians before a final push to crush ISIS fighters who remain in the enclave.

The Arab-Kurd alliance evacuated nearly 5,000 men, women and children from the Deir Ezzor enclave on Wednesday and Friday, but none over the weekend.

A spokesman said the SDF expected to evacuate a large and final batch of civilians from the group's crumbling proto-state on Monday.

"We expect a large number of civilians to exit today and we hope it will be the last batch," SDF spokesman Mustafa Bali said. "According to what we heard from those who have left, there are nearly 5,000 people still inside."

ISIS fighters and civilians, mostly ISIS relatives, are trapped in less than half a square kilometre in the village of al-Baghouz near the Iraqi border.

"In the next few days, our forces will announce the defeat of ISIS," Kurdish foreign affairs official Abdel Karim Omar said Monday. "But this does not mean that we have eliminated terrorism, which must be eradicated at the roots."
