Iraqi forces foil attempt to smuggle oil abroad

An Iraqi National Security Agency force, in co-operation with the Commission of Integrity, seized an oil tanker loaded with 119 tonnes of white oil set for smuggling outside Iraq, the Ministry of Defence said Monday (February 4th).

The shipment was seized at the Umm Qasr port in southern Iraq.

"The seizure [of the shipment] and arrest of the tanker crew took place based on evidence that the chairman of the inspection committee at Umm Qasr port was involved in forging official documents to facilitate the smuggling operations," the ministry said.

The suspects were referred to the relevant authorities for legal action, it said.
