Iraq thwarts ISIS infiltration attempt from Syria

Iraqi forces have thwarted a new attempt by a group of extremists to infiltrate Iraq's Anbar province from Syria, the al-Badiya and al-Jazeera Operations Command said Friday (December 28th).

"The army and border guard forces at dawn Friday repelled a group of terrorists who tried to infiltrate from Syria’s Albu Kamal into al-Qaim in Anbar province," command spokesman Col. Abdul Salam al-Obaidi told Diyaruna.

"Our forces engaged the infiltrators, killed two of them and forced the others to flee back into Syria," he said, noting that weapons were seized in the operation.

Initial investigations have confirmed that one of the killed militants is a foreign fighter, al-Obeidi said.

"Iraqi measures on the border have reached a level where we can confirm that border cities are fully secure against ISIS threats from Syria," he said.

Meanwhile in Anbar, a workshop used in making rockets has been seized, the Ministry of Defence said Friday.

The army's 8th Command’s military intelligence and the 32nd Infantry Brigade’s intelligence unit, discovered an "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) workshop in western Anbar, the ministry said.

"Thirteen guided missiles, 13 oxygen bombs, three rocket launchers and two 225-litre barrels filled with C-4 were seized inside the workshop," the statement added.

"These items were destroyed by the army’s engineering units at a disposal site set up specifically for this purpose," it noted.
