Iraqi forces destroy 6 ISIS tunnels in Ninawa

Iraqi forces have destroyed six "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) tunnels and 40 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a large-scale operation in Mosul, Ninawa Operations Command said Monday (October 15th).

The army operation was carried out over the past 24 hours, commander Nejim Edin Karim al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

“Iraqi forces located six tunnels thanks to locals’ assistance, intelligence tip-offs and aerial images provided by the international coalition in the Badush mountains and al-Atshana villages to the north and east of Mosul,” he said.

“Large amounts of weapons, ammunition and global positioning system (GPS) devices, as well as various explosives, were found inside three of the tunnels,” he said.

“The army completely destroyed these tunnels" by backfilling them, he added.

Security forces also located and destroyed 40 IEDs they found in different areas, "including nine which ISIS terrorists had planted in residential areas before their defeat in Mosul last year", al-Jubury said.
