Iraqi forces increase presence along Syria border

Iraqi forces have intensified their deployment along the border with Syria to prevent infiltrations, the Security Media Centre said Thursday (October 11th).

“The Iraqi-Syrian border is witnessing major deployments of checkpoints, outposts, mobile patrols, earthen berms and ramped up fortifications,” the centre said in a statement.

Through intelligence efforts, night patrols and staged ambushes, Iraqi army units from al-Jazeera Operations Command seek to secure the border for a distance of 200 kilometres, from al-Qaim to Tal Safuq, the statement said.

This will include efforts to block any gaps that may be exploited by extremists belonging to groups such as the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), it said.

“The deployment is aimed at preventing infiltrations from and to Iraqi soil and smuggling operations, and is done in close co-ordination with the Iraqi air force and army’s warplanes,” the statement said.
