ISIS tunnel destroyed in Kirkuk

A large underground tunnel used as a hideout by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in Kirkuk was destroyed in a security operation Tuesday (October 2nd), the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said.

"Acting on intelligence tip-offs, security and army forces found a large ISIS hideout in al-Najatiya village in al-Hawijah, 55 kilometres southwest Kirkuk," a ministry statement said.

ISIS elements used the tunnel as a hiding place after carrying out terror attacks, it said, adding that weapons, explosives and dangerous materials were found at the site.

"The tunnel was destroyed in full and all of its contents were seized," the statement said.
