Iraqi forces dismantle hundreds of landmines, IEDs in Sinjar

More than 350 landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in areas near Sinjar have been dismantled, the Ninawa Operations Command said Friday (August 10th).

The landmines and IEDs, totaling 359, were detected in al-Qabusiya and al-Nasriya in Sinjar, 80 kilometres west of Mosul, commander Nejim Eddin Karim al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

"ISIS had planted these IEDs as booby traps to kill as many civilians and security forces as possible," he said.

"A portion of the IEDs were found inside houses and shops, while the rest were found in an agricultural field," he said, noting that they were dismantled in a joint effort by the Counter-Terrorism Service and the international coalition.
