Gunmen attack Eastern Ghouta regime checkpoint

The Eastern Ghouta region is gripped by security tensions in the wake of an attack on a Syrian regime security checkpoint in the town of Zamalka Wednesday (August 8th), activist Ahmed al-Beik told Diyaruna.

Regime units remain on high alert following the attack, in which armed gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint, wounding a number of troops, he said.

"Syrian army forces soon after conducted a sweep of the area around the checkpoint, searched farmlands and fields and stormed homes in the area where the incident occurred," he said.

The sweep led to the arrest of 60 residents of Zamalka, local media reported.

This attack is the first of its kind since regime forces recaptured Eastern Ghouta, a former opposition stronghold near Damascus.

After a relentless month-long offensive, Syria's government and its ally Russia secured evacuation deals in April to clear out the Eastern Ghouta region of opposition fighters and their families.
