Iraqi forces arrest senior ISIS elements in Mosul, Diyala

Iraqi forces arrested a prominent "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element while he was attempting to cross a bridge from western Mosul to the eastern part of the city, the Iraqi police in Mosul announced Thursday (July 26th).

Faraj Thabit, also known as Abu Ali al-Ansari, held the position of "Islamic Police Chief" during the group's occupation of Mosul, police chief Maj. Gen. Hamad Namis al-Jubury told Diyaruna.

The militant was using a fake name and had changed his appearance by dyeing his hair and shaving his beard, he said.

"The arrest is very significant and may yield information on remaining fugitive ISIS terrorists," al-Jubury said.

In other news, ISIS's "hesba (religious police) chief" of the city of al-Hawija has been arrested in Diyala, Diyala province's police command said in a statement Thursday.

A security force from the Diyala intelligence and counter-terrorism directorate have arrested "a terrorist who held the post of hesba chief in al-Hawija, south-west Kirkuk, during ISIS's occupation of the city", the statement said.

He was arrested along with three of his aides during a security operation conducted in the area of al-Tabaj in eastern Diyala and other areas in the province, it said.
