The Iraqi criminal court in Maysan province on Tuesday (July 10th) sentenced the former manager of the Agricultural Bank to 10 years in prison on corruption charges, a judicial source said.

"The Maysan criminal court which specialises in integrity-related cases sentenced the former manager of the Agricultural Bank in Maysan and his aide to 10 years in prison for corruption and forgery," Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Judge Abdul Sattar Bayraqdar said in a statement.

"The two convicts were proven to have forged 283 promissory notes, cashed and stolen 674 cheques valued at 211 billion Iraqi dinars ($177 million)," he added.

"The judgement was based on the provisions of article 316 of the penal code," he said.
