Iraqi army fully secures international road in west Anbar

Iraqi forces have secured the entire international highway in western Anbar and set up control towers along the road, Anbar Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi said Tuesday (June 19th).

"The 420-kilometre long highway has been secured from Baghdad all the way to Jordan," he told Diyaruna.

Hundreds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and landmines were removed, he said, and rapid emergency response posts and checkpoints were set up.

"The highway is now safe and secure for citizens to use," he said.

"Security forces and supporting units regularly conduct operations targeting 'Islamic State of Iraq and Syria' (ISIS) hideouts in desert areas of the province to eliminate sleeper cells and monitor suspicious movements that may target the highway," al-Falahi said.
