Iraqi forces bust 6-member ISIS cell in Mosul

Iraq's Interior Ministry on Friday (June 1st) said security forces had thwarted attacks planned by an "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) cell in Mosul, as the city prepared to celebrate the first anniversary of the group's ouster.

“Pre-emptive operations carried out by the Counter-Terrorism Service and local police have dismantled a six-member terror cell," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan told Diyaruna.

The cell members had been "planning to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in areas where people will gather to celebrate the first anniversary of their city's liberation from ISIS", he said.

“The operations, carried out in various areas, have nabbed the cell members and seized explosives and locally-made IEDs found in their possession,” he added.

“Some of the detainees admitted to their intention to carry out terrorist attacks in town,” Maan said.
