Pentagon warns Syria's al-Assad against attacking SDF

The Pentagon on Thursday (May 31st) warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad not to carry out an offensive against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an Arab-Kurd alliance that controls Syria’s north-east, AFP reported.

"Any interested party in Syria should understand that attacking US forces or our coalition partners will be a bad policy," said Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the joint staff.

His remarks came after al-Assad told Russian broadcaster RT he would not hesitate to use force to retake the third of the country held by the SDF.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White later clarified the US did not want to get involved in Syria's civil war, and would offer protection only in areas where the SDF are fighting the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS).

The SDF has air support from the international coalition battling ISIS and backing from US and French special forces on the ground.
