Iraqi forces on Thursday (May 24th) thwarted an attempt by six militants to infiltrate from Syria, the Iraqi Border Guards Command’s 2nd District said.
“Six militants, who used rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and light machine guns, were engaged, and one of them was killed and another was injured,” said command spokesman Col. Hamza Jawad al-Ameli.
The militants were forced to retreat back into Syria through the Iraqi village of Baghuz, which is administratively part of al-Qaim in Anbar province, he said.
Security forces seized “several weapons and a four-wheel-drive vehicle belonging to the militants, who are most likely 'Islamic State of Iraq and Syria' (ISIS) elements”, al-Ameli added.
