Iraqi forces arrest ISIS arms-keeper in Diyala

Iraqi forces have arrested the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element who was charge of the group's weapons caches in Diyala province, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday (May 16th).

The arrest was made during a joint army-police operation in al-Saadiya district of north-eastern Diyala and was based on intelligence information, the ministry said in a statement.

Diyala province's Counter-Terrorism and Intelligence Department "received information on ISIS's intention to summon the elements who are in charge of weapons caches within cities", the ministry said.

These elements were then instructed to hand over their weapons stores to ISIS sleeper cells, the ministry said.

“A joint work team was immediately formed and sent to al-Saadiya,” the ministry said, where it arrested a man using the alias "Abu Mariam", who was in charge of ISIS weapons caches in al-Saadiya.

Security forces seized 41 Kalashnikov rifles and four RPK light machine guns found hidden in barrels under the ground, the ministry said.
