Iraq says it killed 36 ISIS elements in Syria raid

Iraq said Sunday (April 22nd) its forces had killed "36 terrorists" belonging to the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS), including senior leaders, in Thursday air raids in Syria, AFP reported.

"The Iraqi air raids, carried out by several F-16s in Syria on April 19th, targeted ISIS terrorists who represented a danger to Iraq," said Gen. Yahya Rasul, spokesman for the Joint Operations Command.

"According to our information, the raids took place while there was a meeting of terrorist leaders and it achieved its goal with the death of 36 of them," he said.

The coalition confirmed the raid, which took place near the town of Hajin in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor, about 50 kilometres from the Iraqi border.

On Monday, a senior ISIS leader was killed after Iraqi warplanes targeted a gathering of the group’s fighters in Syria, Iraqi media reported.

The ISIS leader, identified as Abu Luqman al-Suri, is believed to be the deputy of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and was in charge of recruiting suicide attackers in Syria and dispatching them to Iraq.

Joint Iraqi army and Border Guards forces also killed four ISIS elements who were trying to infiltrate into Iraq from Syria, the Anbar Operations Command said Monday.

The joint forces clashed with the ISIS elements in Tal Safuk as they attempted to cross the border from Syria’s Albu Kamal, command spokesman Col. Mohammed al-Dulaimi told Diyaruna.

A vehicle carrying weapons and explosives was also burnt in the operation, he said.
