ISIS kills 19 Syria regime fighters near Iraq border

"Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements have killed at least 19 pro-regime fighters in a spate of attacks in eastern Syria, AFP reported Sunday (April 1st).

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacks struck in and around the town of Albu Kamal, near the border with Iraq.

ISIS has largely been defeated, but still clings to pockets of territory in eastern Syria. Albu Kamal was a long-time stronghold of the group, which it lost at the end of 2017.

The Observatory says the group now holds less than 5% of territory in Syria, mainly pockets in the deserts of eastern and central regions.
