Iraq's integrity watchdog prevents waste of $31 million in 2017

Iraq's Commission of Integrity (CoI) on Thursday (February 8th) said it has prevented the waste of about 36 billion Iraqi dinars ($31 million) in 2017 by verifying the sales and rentals of properties owned by the Ministry of Construction and Housing.

"The Commission's field investigative teams that are tasked with checking the sales and rentals of properties belonging to the Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Ministry of Municipalities and Public Works have prevented the waste of about 36 billion Iraqi dinars in 2017," CoI said in a statement.

The teams achieved this through verifying the files of 14,341 properties in all provinces, except for Baghdad and the Kurdish Region, the statement said.

"[They] found many violations that are serious enough to be labelled as financial and administrative corruption crimes, of which 25 have been referred to the Ministry of Municipalities' Inspector General Office," it said.

It added that 18 others have been referred to the CoI's investigation office.

"Five of those violations have already been referred to the Commission's investigating court which hears integrity-related cases," said the statement.

There are also 13 violations under investigation, it added.
