Iraq’s Commission of Integrity (CoI) announced on Thursday (January 18th) that it has restored the ownership of several properties in Karbala worth an estimated 43 billion Iraqi dinars ($37 million) to the state.
"Corruption by a group of employees has led to the transfer of state-owned properties to individuals," the CoI said in a statement.
After conducting investigations, the fraud, which covered a total of 15 buildings worth 43 billion Iraqi dinars, has been discovered, the statement said.
"The corruption [case] has inflicted losses to public funds," it said, noting that some officials involved in the case have been arrested, including the general manager of real estate registration in Karbala.
