Iraqi forces thwart suicide attack in Salaheddine

A suicide bomber wearing an explosives vest was arrested Thursday (January 18th) at an outdoor market west of Tikrit, the Salaheddine police command said.

"Security forces spotted a suicide bomber at an outdoor market in al-Qala, west of Tikrit, and besieged him," deputy Salaheddine police chief Col. Ali Mahmoud al-Samaraei told Diyaruna.

"He was apprehended after several attempts," al-Samaraei said, adding that the explosive vest was dismantled after he had a nervous breakdown.

The man, who joined the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) two years ago, had consumed large amounts of drugs before he went out intending to blow himself up, al-Samaraei said.

"He is being questioned now, and will be referred to court soon for attempting to kill hundreds of Iraqi civilians at that market," he said.
