Hamrin mountains fully cleared of ISIS remnants

Over the course of a 72-hour operation, Iraqi forces cleared the Hamrin mountains and Wadi Zaghitoun of "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants, Iraq's Joint Operations Command said Thursday (January 11th).

“Iraqi forces completed a large-scale operation supported by the Iraqi air force and international coalition warplanes," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

Security forces killed 11 ISIS fighters "after clashing with them and seizing large quantities of weapons", he said.

“The campaign also covered the neighbouring Wadi Zaghitoun, to make sure there are no terrorist cells or weapons there,” he said.

“The army set up control posts to deny ISIS any chance to regroup in that area by taking advantage of its rough terrain,” Rasul added.
