Iraqi forces crack down on ISIS cells in Kirkuk

A large-scale military operation has kicked off to clear Kirkuk province of "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) remnants, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Thursday (January 4th).

The Iraqi army and police units on Thursday launched a military campaign to search and clear the areas of al-Hawijah, al-Rashad and al-Zarga of ISIS cells and look for wanted individuals, the ministry said in a statement.

They will also seize weapons and explosives, it said.

"Iraqi forces are making good progress in the campaign thanks to the co-operation of the local population," the statement said.
