2 ISIS elements arrested, explosives seized in Baghdad

In the third operation of its kind in less than 24 hours, Iraqi security forces in Baghdad arrested two "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements and seized explosives in their possession, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday (January 3rd).

"Special operations troops raided a building in Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad [city centre], where they found two ISIS elements," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan told Diyaruna.

One of the detainees was injured in previous clashes with the security forces, he said, adding that various weapons, explosives and ammunition were found in their possession.

On Tuesday, the Baghdad Operations Command also announced its forces had seized a bag filled with explosives, 15 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a short-range Grad rocket, 40 shells and three mortars belonging to ISIS.

This comes as part of a large-scale security campaign involving searches and raids in southern, western and central Baghdad.
