7 civilians killed in airstrikes in Syria's Idlib

At least seven civilians, including five children, were killed Tuesday (January 2nd) by airstrikes in Syria's north-western Idlib province, AFP reported.

Regime and allied forces, backed by Russian warplanes, have been battling extremist and opposition fighters for more than a week in an area between Idlib and Hama provinces.

The airstrikes targeted the town of Khan Subul in the centre of Idlib province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"There were at least seven dead, five children and two women," the Observatory said.

"We do not know if these were airstrikes by the Syrian regime or the Russians," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

The regime’s push on the edge of Idlib province follows two months of sporadic fighting that the UN says has displaced more than 60,000 people.

The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said displacement sites are reportedly overwhelmed, and that some services are 400% above their planned capacity to serve.
