Iraqi forces clear areas south of Baghdad of ISIS war remnants

Iraqi forces have cleared several areas south of the capital Baghdad from "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) war remnants, the Baghdad Operations Command said Monday (December 18th).

"Joint security forces have cleared a radius of 50 kilometres south of Baghdad of remnants of war and unexploded ordnance left behind by ISIS in agricultural areas," the command said in a statement.

Thirty improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 220 containers of explosives, mortars of various calibres and other remnants of war have been found, the statement said.

"Security forces detonated these materials without incident," it said.

"The campaign is part of a programme to clear areas [in Iraq] of explosives and return their residents to them," the statement said.
