UN to supply electricity to Iraq's al-Qaim

The UN has announced it plans to supply the Anbar province border town of al-Qaim with electricity via huge generators, the Anbar provincial council said Friday (December 15th).

The move comes as part of efforts to rehabilitate cities in Iraq recently liberated from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS).

“The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has allocated 40 giant generators, each with a capacity of 250 kVA, for al-Qaim,” council spokesman Farhan Mohammed said in a statement.

“The aim is to provide electricity to residents and support stabilisation efforts in town,” he said, noting that “the power infrastructure is 100% destroyed and will need until mid-2018 to be restored, assuming the necessary funds are allocated".
