Iraqi forces clear large swathes of Anbar’s desert

Joint Iraqi forces have cleared large swathes of Anbar’s desert over the past three days, killing dozens of extremists and seizing weapons and explosives, the Anbar Operations Command said Thursday (December 7th).

The Iraqi army, Federal Police and tribal forces have cleared 90 kilometres of the desert that stretches from northern Rawa to southern Salaheddine, assistant Anbar operations commander Maj. Gen. Mohammed Saeed told Diyaruna.

Thirty-two "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements were killed and six others were arrested, he said.

Large quantities of weapons and explosives also were seized and four ISIS positions, including a large camp, have been destroyed in these military operations, he added.

"The area has now become secure, and we will set up military headquarters and control centres there to prevent terrorists from returning," Saeed said.

"The explosive ordnance disposal unit has defused dozens of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during the same operation," he said, adding that the remaining desert areas will be cleared in the next few days.
