Iraqi forces roll into town on al-Qaim outskirts

Iraqi forces have begun storming the town of al-Obaidi on the southern outskirts of al-Qaim, the Anbar Operations Command said Monday (October 30th).

The move is part of an offensive to recapture the western Anbar city from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS).

“Joint Iraqi forces are advancing on al-Obaidi with aerial support from the international coalition,” said 7th Division Commander Maj. Gen. Numan al-Zawbaie.

Capturing al-Obaidi is the gateway to entering the centre of al-Qaim, he said.

“ISIS has suffered heavy losses in Monday’s battles, with 42 terrorists killed, including foreigners, and six car bombs destroyed," he said, including three that were destroyed by coalition airstrikes.

“Iraqi forces have evacuated dozens of families from the area and transferred them to areas away from clashes with the terrorists,” al-Zawbaie said.
