SDF seize al-Omar oilfield in Syria’s Deir Ezzor

The Syrian Democratic Forces on Sunday (October 22nd) announced they had seized one of Syria's largest oilfields from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) in the east of country, AFP reported.

Al-Omar oilfield in Deir Ezzor province produced 30,000 barrels per day before the start of the Syrian war and became a key source of income for ISIS after the group seized it in 2014.

Coalition airstrikes destroyed the field in 2015, after the group had reaped estimated oil sale revenues from it of between $1.7 million and $5.1 million a month, according to the coalition.

The Arab-Kurd alliance announced the seizure in a short statement, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said SDF fighters took control of al-Omar after ISIS retreated.

Al-Omar lies on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, around 10 kilometres east of Mayadeen.

On Sunday, the Observatory said the SDF also had seized the Sayjan oilfield to the north of al-Omar overnight.
