Iraqi army kicks off operation in Anbar’s desert

A large-scale search operation to clear Anbar’s western desert of "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) elements kicked off Tuesday (August 29th), the Anbar Operations Command said.

Units from the Anbar Operations Command are conducting a comb and search operation to hunt ISIS elements and destroy their positions, commander Maj. Gen. Mahmoud al-Falahi said in a press conference.

"The search operations started from Kilo 160 west of Ramadi, all the way to al-Rutbah, and northward for a distance of 100 kilometres into al-Rutbah and Wadi Horan," he said.

The campaign, which is receiving broad aerial support from Iraqi helicopters and international coalition fighter jets, has so far led to uncovering a weapons cache and tankers that ISIS uses to fill gas in its vehicles ahead of terrorist attacks, he said.
