Iran missiles into Syria strike ISIS targets: IRGC

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Monday (June 19th) missiles it fired into Syria had hit "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) targets in retaliation for Tehran attacks claimed by the extremists earlier this month, AFP reported.

"Based on credible information, the missile operation against ISIS has been successful," IRGC spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said on the elite force's Sepahnews website.

The IRGC fired six missiles from the west of Iran across the border and into Syria's mostly ISIS-held Deir Ezzor province, targeting an ISIS command base, they said earlier.

Sunday's strike came after twin attacks in Tehran on June 7th killed 17 people, in the first attacks in Iran claimed by ISIS.

State television said the attack killed an ISIS commander, a Saudi national named Saad al-Hosseini, known as Abu Saad.
