Iraqi forces foil suicide attacks in al-Muthanna

Iraqi forces thwarted an attempt by two suicide bombers to infiltrate the province of al-Muthanna in southern Iraq, east of Anbar, via a desert road, the Interior Ministry said Monday (June 12th).

Members of the "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) "last night tried to infiltrate al-Muthanna on board two vehicles loaded with explosives via the province's western desert border," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan told Diyaruna.

"Our forces detected the two vehicles and blew up one of them, while the other managed to flee and hide in the desert," he said.

Security forces with helicopter support are combing the desert in search of the fleeing vehicle and nearby terror cells, Maan said.

"The failed attempt might have been aimed at getting car bombs into al-Muthanna and carrying out terrorist attacks targeting citizens in Eid al-Fitr," he said.
