Basra police crack down on armed groups

A joint Iraqi army and security agencies campaign has kicked off in the city of Basra to crack down on armed groups and criminal gangs, the Basra police said Friday (May 9th).

The campaign targets gangs involved in kidnappings, extortions, thefts and drug dealing.

"Joint forces have succeeded in the first hours of the campaign in freeing a child and arresting two kidnappers in al-Tawisa, south of Basra," Col. Malek al-Fatlawi of Basra police command told Diyaruna.

"Six members of another armed group have been arrested, and weapons, drugs and counterfeit money in their possession have been seized," he added.
