Iraqi forces killed a senior "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) element in an airstrike targeting al-Hawija, north-east of Baghdad, the Diyala provincial council said in a Thursday (June 8th) statement.
"Abu Mohammed al-Shami, a senior Syrian ISIS element, was killed in an airstrike launched by the Iraqi army's air force component on an ISIS headquarters in the village of Fadhikha," security committee chairman Sadeq al-Husseini said.
The airstrike came after continuous monitoring of al-Shami's movements, with support from the Iraqi intelligence services and security forces, he said.
