Iraqi forces ambushed a suicide bomber disguised as a federal police officer who was planning to target pilgrims to Baghdad's Kadhimiya district, the Baghdad Operations Command said Friday (April 21st).
"A special team from the 1st Division’s Intelligence Unit and the 1st Brigade’s Intelligence Unit set up an ambush and killed the suicide bomber who was wearing a federal police uniform," the command said in a statement.
The attacker was driving a motorcycle packed with explosives on Shakha 9 Road on his way to al-Laj checkpoint in southern Baghdad, the statement said.
Intelligence information has indicated that "terrorists in the so-called Wilayat al-Janoub are planning to target the visitors of Kadhimiya using vehicles and motorcycles packed with explosives", it said.
"The engineering unit was summoned and dismantled the motorcycle which contained nitrate, mortars and other explosives," the statement said.
