New military operation kicks off in Salaheddine

Iraqi forces launched a large-scale military operation in Salaheddine province on Friday (April 7th) to crack down on "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) pockets, Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said.

"The army and Federal Police forces on Friday launched a pre-emptive, large-scale operation to hit deep into ISIL strongholds in response to the recent terrorist attacks in the province," Joint Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahiya Rasul told Diyaruna.

The operation targeted Hamrin Mountains, northern Tikrit, southern Baiji and al-Siniya area, he said.

"Many ISIL elements were killed, nine ISIL headquarters and booby-trapped vehicles were destroyed and weapons and explosives were seized in the operation," he added.

"The operation, supported by the international coalition and the Iraqi Air Force, will continue until its planned goal has been achieved," Rasul said.
