Norway sentences ISIL recruiter to 9 years in prison

A Norwegian court on Tuesday (April 4th) sentenced a 31-year-old Norwegian citizen to nine years in prison for recruiting a candidate who wanted to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria, AFP reported.

An Oslo court also found Ubaydullah Hussain guilty of pledging allegiance to ISIL, financially supporting the group, providing its supporters with equipment and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The trial was Norway's first over recruitment of potential fighters for ISIL, listed as a terror organisation by the UN.

In 2015, Hussain prepared Simen Andreassen, now 20, to go fight in Syria, taking him to Gothenburg in Sweden, where he was to begin his journey.

Swedish police arrested Andreassen at Landvetter Airport in Gothenburg. He was sentenced on Tuesday to two years and 10 months in prison.

Hussain was also accused of recruiting another Norwegian, Thorn Alexander Karlsen, who was killed in Syria in March 2015.
