Iraqi forces liberate new areas in west Mosul

Iraqi forces have liberated new areas of west Mosul, with coalition airstrikes targeting "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) sites and fortifications, the Joint Operations Command said Friday (March 3rd).

"Iraqi forces have retaken all crossroads leading to al-Mansour neighbourhood and have recaptured outposts in the neighbourhood," command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahiya al-Zubaidi told Diyaruna.

Security forces are now preparing to storm al-Dandan neighbourhood, he said.

“The Iraqi forces have so far cleared six areas, and have removed about three tonnes of remnants of war, explosives and improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” he added.

“Civilians have prevented us from using heavy weaponry in the battle," he said, adding that although this has slowed the Iraqi advance, "we are making the required progress".

Meanwhile, he said, the coalition also has launched successful airstrikes targeting ISIL sites and fortifications in areas under ISIL control in west Mosul, "and has killed dozens of terrorists".
