East Mosul clearing operations in full swing

Iraqi forces have cleared the majority of neighbourhoods in eastern Mosul from war remnants, the Joint Operations Command said Wednesday (February 1st).

The eastern half of Mosul was fully recaptured from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) last week.

"Iraqi forces have cleared 44 out of 56 neighbourhoods in eastern Mosul," Joint Operations Command spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya al-Zubaidi told Diyaruna.

"Twelve tonnes of explosives, ammunition, landmines, rockets and ISIL military remnants have been removed, and hundreds of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and tens of houses rigged with explosives have been dismantled," he said.

The army’s engineering teams and Counter-Terrorism Service, in co-operation with the UN and the international coalition, are all taking part in the clearing operations to pave the way for the gradual return of displaced residents, he said.
