Iraq completes preparations for west Mosul battle

Iraqi forces are now ready to press towards the western side of Mosul to liberate it from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), a high level Iraqi military official told Diyaruna on Monday (January 30th).

"Iraqi forces have completed all the necessary preparations to launch the battle for western Mosul after the eastern side has been liberated," Ninawa operations commander Lt. Gen. Nejim Eddin Karim al-Jubury said.

Forces from the army, Counter-Terrorism Service and the federal police will head the offensive, with support from the international coalition, he said.

So far, over 3,200 internally displaced people (IDPs) have returned to their liberated areas in east Mosul, according to the Ministry of Migration.

"Ministry camps saw today the return of 3,237 IDPs to their original areas of residence in Mosul," the ministry said in a statement Monday.
