Fresh Syria raids as Astana talks confirmed

Syrian warplanes launched strikes in several parts of the country on Wednesday (January 11th) despite a fragile truce, as Russia confirmed a January 23rd date for new peace talks, AFP reported.

The negotiations, to be held in the Kazakh capital Astana, are intended to build on a ceasefire in effect since late December, brokered by Russia and Turkey.

The truce has been threatened by continuing violence, particularly near Damascus.

Overnight and into Wednesday, regime warplanes hit opposition areas in Aleppo and Idlib provinces and the Eastern Ghouta region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The overnight strikes in Idlib targeted positions belonging to al-Nusra Front (ANF), now known as Fatah al-Sham Front, which is not party to the ceasefire, the Observatory said.

Strikes on Taftanaz killed three fighters from an ANF-allied group, the Observatory said.

On Wednesday morning, regime airstrikes also hit Eastern Ghouta, the Observatory said, killing a woman and wounding nine other people.

The Observatory also reported clashes and airstrikes in the Wadi Barada region , which has seen some of the most serious violence since the truce went into effect on December 30th.
