Iraqi air force drops 4 million 'empathy' letters on Mosul

The Iraqi air force dropped four million letters over Mosul on Thursday (December 22nd), the international coalition said, in a move aimed at providing "empathy and support" for residents of the city.

The air drop comes after the international Institute for War and Peace Reporting started a campaign called "Letters to Mosul" on October 17th, the day Iraqi forces began their operation to recapture Mosul from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), AFP reported.

"The letters of empathy and support for Mosul residents were written by Iraqis from all over the country," the coalition said in a statement.

"This initiative by the people of Iraq reassures the residents of Mosul, held hostage by ISIL for more than two years, that they have not been forgotten and that the rest of Iraq is standing with them, waiting to welcome them back in solidarity when ISIL is defeated."

According to the coalition, the letters are based on 2,160 hand-written notes penned in the days since the Mosul offensive began.

On the battle front, more than 40 fighters were killed in operations south of Mosul over the past 24 hours, the Iraqi Federal Police Command said Friday.

"At least 40 terrorists were killed" since Thursday evening in attacks targeting their positions and fortifications near al-Ghazlani camp, south of Mosul, and in clashes with Iraqi forces, Federal Police Chief Lt. Gen. Raed Shaker Jawdat said in a statement.
