Iraqi army repels ISIL attack in western Anbar

The Iraqi army, with assistance from international coalition fighter jets, thwarted a large-scale attack by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) on police and army positions in western Anbar, the Anbar Operations Command said Friday (December 16th).

"The army repelled an ISIL attack targeting an Iraqi Federal Police headquarters and an army barracks in Kilo 125, south-west of Ramadi," Anbar Operations commander Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Mahalawi told Diyaruna.

Army forces blew up four vehicles packed with explosives driven by suicide bombers, and killed at least 12 ISIL fighters, while the others fled towards the western desert near the Syrian border, he said.
