Canada troops engaging in firefights with ISIL

Canadian special forces training Kurdish militia in Iraq have directly engaged "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) fighters "a few dozen" times in the last month, AFP reported Wednesday (November 16th).

Maj. Gen. Michael Rouleau told a press conference that Canadian special forces used sniper, small arms, mortar and anti-tank rockets against ISIL over the past month in response to threats to either themselves, Kurdish allies or civilians.

"There have been a substantial number of engagements," he said, explaining that Canadian troops have fired on ISIL fighters charging Kurdish positions on the battlefield.

Canada has more than 200 special forces in Iraq training Kurdish fighters.
