Iraqi forces free around 4,000 civilians used as human shields

Iraqi forces over the past two days have freed around 4,000 civilians who were being held south of Mosul and used by the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" as human shields to slow down the advance of liberating forces , the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced Monday (November 7th).

The civilians, who were mostly women and children, were being held in the areas of Kujli and Karaj, ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.

"Freeing them was not easy and has demanded sacrifices from us, but eventually, they were taken to safe places in the camps west and south of Mosul," he added.

Military plans have been made to likewise free residents being held captive by ISIL in several other areas, he noted.
