Syria regime takes opposition-held Aleppo district

The Syrian regime on Tuesday (September 27th) took control of an opposition-held district in central Aleppo city, where it is pressing an operation to retake opposition territory, AFP reported.

The army retook control of Farafira district, north-west of the Aleppo citadel, a military source said.

Syria's army announced an operation to retake the opposition-held east of Aleppo city on Thursday, days after a week-long ceasefire broke down.

Tuesday's capture marked the first advance on the ground for regime troops inside the city since they began the operation.

NATO head Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday the "morally totally unacceptable" bombardment of Aleppo broke international law, and called for genuine steps to be taken to restore a ceasefire.
