UN Syria chemical weapons probe extended for one month

The UN Security Council has given a panel investigating chemical weapons use in Syria another month to complete its work and determine who is responsible for chlorine attacks in the war, AFP reported Thursday (September 22nd).

The UN-led joint investigative mechanism (JIM) last month reported that Syrian regime forces had carried out at least two chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015 and that the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) had used mustard gas as a weapon.

The JIM will have until October 31st to finish the probe, the UN said. Its mandate had been due to expire on Friday.
