Iraqi forces gain ground against ISIL in western Anbar

Iraqi forces recaptured Camp Bravo in Ramadi Island from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), the Ministry of Defence said Thursday (September 22nd).

"Anbar Operations Command units have liberated Camp Bravo, north-west of Abu Thiab, and raised the Iraqi flag on it, in an operation launched to retake Ramadi Island," the ministry said in a statement.

"The camp is a key site which ISIL had seized about a year ago," Anbar police chief Maj. Gen. Hadi Kassar Erzaij told Diyaruna.

"Retaking it was a challenge for the security forces," he said, "and with this victory, ISIL is deemed to have lost one of its last strongholds in the area."

Also on Thursday, the Iraqi army and allied tribesmen liberated four villages in al-Baghdadi Island to the west of Ramadi from ISIL.

"Army forces and tribesmen have liberated al-Jawaana, Jubbah, al-Masira and al-Maamira in al-Baghdadi Island," al-Jazeera Commander Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Muhammadi told Diyaruna.

"These villages were liberated after dozens of terrorists were killed, several car bombs were destroyed and hundreds of landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were dismantled," al-Muhammadi said.
