Iraqi forces capture Haditha Island from ISIL

Iraqi army forces and allied tribesmen, supported by international coalition fighter jets, have recaptured Haditha Island in western Iraq from the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), a military spokesman said Wednesday (September 21st).

"Our forces have fully liberated Haditha Island, west of Ramadi, and raised the Iraqi flag on the area," Anbar Military Operations Commander Maj. Gen. Ismail al-Mahalawi told Diyaruna.

"The island, which includes six villages, was liberated this morning by the Iraqi army’s 7th Division with the support of allied tribesmen," he said.

Preparations are underway to launch a similar attack to liberate Heet Island, he said, noting that ISIL is using areas with high tree density as bases following its successive defeats in Anbar's larger cities.
