Iraqi forces thwarted an "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) attack targeting an oil field east of Tikrit, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Friday (September 16th).
"Army forces repelled a large-scale ISIL attack on the Ajeel oil field," ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul told Diyaruna.
Clashes raged for two hours before Iraqi warplanes intervened, killing most of the ISIL gunmen and forcing others to withdraw, he said.
"About 30 ISIL elements were killed in the failed attack and their weapons and vehicles were seized," he added.
